Leighton Buzzard Observer & Linslade Gazette
Tuesday, 28th July to 1st September 1863

Brief background

At the conclusion of the Fire Brigade Demonstration on the 24th June 1863, when participants were returning home, an accident occurred in which a post-boy with the Buckingham Brigade was killed (see the main page). The man concerned had been married with eight children and the shocking fatal event led local people to organise a collection to provide a little for the widow. This collection was advertised over a number of weeks in the local paper and lists of people and their donations were printed. Below are transcripts of these adverts that appeared in the paper.

28th July 1863

THE LATE FATAL ACCIDENT.

AT the suggestion of several Gentlemen and Tradesmen of Leighton, a subscription will be opened on behalf of the widow and children of the Buckingham postboy who was accidentally killed on the 24th inst. The deceased was a steady man and highly respected; he has left a widow and eight children, the eldest not being more than fourteen years, and a cripple. Messrs Bassett, Son & Harris, have kindly offered to receive subscriptions at their Banks at Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, and Newport Pagnell, and any donation, however small, will be thankfully received by J. Young, Superintendent of Leighton Brigade. A full list of the Subscriptions will appear in next week's Observer.
